This diagram show five planes that shapes a horizontal and vertical playscape. Each plane holds deliberate moves informed through the movement of angles and a curve.

As my buildings’ program was designed to house two single mothers with their children, I transformed the building into a play toy. Here, a mother and child are pictured with the imagination for play.

The section cut above shows the spaces that are created in the building. On the top level, to the left of the stairs, the childrens space is shown. This area consists of a large gathering space, a sunken pit for play, and a lofted area with a ladder for children’s sleeping.
The area to the right is the mothers space, there are two private bedrooms with an open space for rest. The cutting plane has cut through a thin hallway on the right that overlooks into the community care center. Beyond the walls are a private balcony space as well.
In the understory a dynamic playscape is built. Here, shapes create an interactive play area where children and mothers can interpret their own form of play.

This is a plan cut of the ground topography. Cut from 3’ above the ground, the shapes show the imaginative playground. In dynamic motion, shapes range from below to above ground, where the shapes serve as structural and landscape elements. This program continues up from the ground plane, throughout the four other horizontal planes.

Cutting through the building, the deliberate movement of shapes is shown. Following a grid pattern, two angles emerged and one curve. These lines are repeted through the external walls, internal lofts and rooms, as well as the stairs and balcony. Shapes are translated amongst planes and create a lovely, interactive living space. Here, play and rest are balanced creating spaces for mothers and their children.
