SIMRAN KAUR

My bedroom has an entry way through the living room. It is a 19’1” x 12’3” space in an apartment located in Bloomington, Indiana. Right when you enter, the bathroom is on your right which is 8’5” in length and 6’7” in width and has flooring that is fabricated with 2x2 inch polished Daltile Keystone tiles in sky blue. A little further, on your left is a decent sized walk-in closet that is 4’6” in length and 5’ in width. The rest of my bedroom and the closet have flooring made from Cumaru wood which is tinted in different shades of brown and coated with protective wax layer. There are two high windows in my room that let natural light seep through and out look the community park. Walls of my room are 6 inches thick and made predominantly of cement, brick and wood for durability and stability. Floor plan also gives a gist of the furniture that is in my room like a study desk, chair, queen sized bed etc.

This elevation view exhibits the eyeshot one gets after entering my room and moving past the bathroom. This view of my room is my favorite because it exposes my huge windows, my bookshelf, my plant named Bubble and my wall with photos, along with a lot of other details.Going from left to right on the wall you can see 3 framed photos, the biggest photo is an abstract image of circles, the second picture is of me in front of the mountains from when I went on a hike and the last photo is another abstract image with triangles. In the center are my two windows with the blinds semi closed revealing the tree that is right outside my house and can be seen through my window. On top of the right side of my wall is a small book shelf on which I have placed five of my favorite books along with a small planted african violet in a vase I got from India. Below the bookshelf Is my medal hung on a hook, that I got when I was in high school for being a part of the winning team in Science Olympiad. My Ikea desk can also be seen in the view with my MacBook air, coffee mug and a small abstract metal decor on it. Behind my desk and chair is my queen size bed with folded blanket placed at the bottom of the bed.

The Actor-Network map demonstrates the process of making a Waffle knit blanket from Boll and Branch and the labor forces that go behind it. The map shows a chain of steps starting from materials. Boll and Branch obtain the majority of its goods from India, which has over time helped the economy of the country. Sustainability is a big focus for the company so they practice conventional farming which uses 91% less water and are also FTC certified. The sustainability report that was published in 2020 reflects back on not only 6 years of their endeavor to be environmentally friendly but also efforts to improve labor. Their efforts to be an ethical business has affected labor in positive ways by employing a lot of people in valued areas of India where farmers depend solely on selling rain fed crops like organic cotton, which is one of the most used materials by the company. Improved wages and gender equality is the center of the topic, meanwhile making more efforts to be labor friendly and considerate towards employees.

Organization diagram of my room is based on an ancient indian architectural technique called Vastu. It incorporates Budhhist and Hindu beliefs about certain objects being positioned at a certain location and the layout being designed a certain way to illuminate the maximum amount of positive energy. The North side and the North East side of the room are considered the most pious parts of a space, which is why the bed and study desk is placed there. South section of a layout is considered the least spiritual, where the bathroom is built. The red section represents the area with the most sacred and positive energy. All the dashed and uniform lines representing different auras come together to form a circle of balance in the room.

The graphic composition represents the pathway of vastu energies and how it is incorporated in the room. The dashed line extending from the window towards the bed represents the bed being a few inches away from the window and against a solid wall. Alignment of the bed and desk is shown by small circular dashed lines. Curved line from the entrance to the window shows the distance between the least pious side,South, being away from the most energy dense area, North. The uniformly dashed and gapped lines from the desk to entrance acts as a border to display where the spiritual energy starts from and spreads upwards towards the North, West and East side. The circular shape in the middle connects all the different energies and 4 lines intersecting together.

The top view shows the circular path directly intersecting with the Northeast section of the plan since it was manipulated into pillars and rotated to sit on top of the extruded circles. Small circular dashed lines are extruded and one of the extruded columns is moved towards the other end of the layout. All the extrusions are extruded in different proportions to depict the different depths in energies.

Vectors in the diagram are manipulated and extruded to represent a city view. NorthEast line was extruded the highest since it is the most divine area which included the bed and study desk. The circular path was manipulated in a way where the gaps were extruded in different lengths to represent how the circle of balance can go off if one aspect of vastu is disarranged.

This view shows the segment that was aligning the desk and bed. A combination of extruded vertical rectangles composes the plan. The even difference and split between the extruded surfaces can be seen. The cylindrical extruded surface which was initially an alignment of desk and bed is placed in three different heights.
