QI LEMUGE

This auto repair shop is located in a place which is surrounded by shops that provides all kinds of services to car kinds of stuff in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. Other shops sit right next to the shop, building up a large townhouse.

The composition of the original building is very simple, like a square box. The owner built up several small rooms inside the building and installed four lifting machines and only have a large window on the front. The building has two entrances, one allows people outside to come in, another is a simple hole that connects this shop to another shop next to it.

The diagram shows the main materials that build up this auto repair shop, including steel roof, concrete wall, rubber grounds steel doors, concrete and steel walls, steel portal frame, and other kinds of steel and rubbers that made up the lifting machine.

The Storage stuff mapping concentrated on the life cycle of storage stuff that is made up of different kinds of materials. On the production process, it listed the video that shows how these materials are made, what are the harms that this procedure might cause to the environment, and what measures are taken. On the use stage, it listed different situations that need storage stuff and news that related to the problematic side of this stuff. And for the end of life, only three kinds of materials were recyclable and it listed the information that tells how they are recycled.

The car stuff mapping shows different parts that made up a car and also focused on the life cycle of a car. On the production stage, it shows the introduction about each part and videos that tell how they are produced. One the use stage it shows the five largest car factories and how to size related to cars influence the building code. Finally, for the end of life, it shows that 70% of a car is metal and 20% and plastics. During the end of life, most of them are recyclable.

Since the original shop is located in a place that has a strong connection to cars, my idea was to explode cars into eight parts that are listed on the ANT map and hold an exhibition in this small warehouse. First I arranged different massings that will hold different parts of a car and broke all the interior walls. Then I decided to occupy the space with scaffolds, also make use of small spaces created by scaffolds, and turn them into storage spaces. Thus the scaffolds both stand for structures and storage stuff. The scissors on of scaffolds serve as walls and I tried to arrange them to form a space similar to a maze, I intentionally added a circulation on the top that does not intersect with the maze to offer an aerial view.

There are five entrances to the maze in total. each entrance offers a different path to different rooms. I offered different colors to the columns, scissors, and ground of each room to create boundaries between rooms. By going through different paths you can see different models of every part of the car. In the center, I left one lifting machine of the original building and lifted a car body on it. This is the tallest and biggest room, which stands for the main hall of the maze.

Since there is no wall in the maze, from the west side of the room you can see almost everything in the maze. Because each room in a maze contains different sizes of objects, so I also set different hight for each room. The tallest room with golden scaffolds is the main hall and the height of it is the same as the lifting machine. Red bars on the top are lighting systems that are rearranged. The height of the lowest room, the room contains a suspension system, is one meter which means most people are taller than these scaffolds.

To create a dense spatial experience, the distance between columns is 1 meter, which can only allow one person to go through the path at a time. Inside the maze, the different heights of the columns and colors could create a spatial experience that largely differentiates from each other. the board put on scaffolds horizontally and vertically holds most of the object and can also give people implications that they are walking inside the body of a car.
