JOSEPH JOHNSTON

I started this project by choosing three small objects at random. I began by combining these objects in weird and interesting ways. Based off the carabiner, I decided my occupants were really into rock climbing and wanted to incorporate it into their everyday lives. I took this form derived by the belay device and elongated it within the original plinth that occupied my lot. This provided the space for two bedrooms: one for the main owner and operator of the gym, and one for people that work temporarily at the gym, van lifers passing through, and unhoused people to stay temporarily and have access to clean facilities. I then added orthogonal boxes jutting out of the sides to add space for workout rooms, spin class, and yoga. Continuing this juxtaposition of orthogonal lines and blob forms, I added box shaped skylights that emerge out of the blob thats protruding out of the box shaped plinth. These orthogonal elements and the traiditional shaped roof act as callouts to the typical suburban home that previously occupied the plot.
