This is the figure ground map of Chiyoda city, Kanda District, Tokyo. Chiyoda city gathers various capital functions and is the center of politics, administration and justice in Japan. It’s one of the major center of Tokyo. Others include Chuo city, Minato city, Shinjuku city and Shibuya city. Relying on the public transport system under the TOD, the urbanization process of Tokyo was developing rapidly. Following this trend, high-density buildings were formed as well.

This aerial view shows the city block between Avenue chuo, Avenue Yasukuni and Old Nakasen road. The highlighted complex is a large mixed commercial buildings comprised of ten separate buildings. This is a typical commercial building block in Tokyo, just like thousands of other similar building blocks, embedded in Tokyo with high-density architectural space.

This drawing shows the main characteristics of urban blocks between Avenue chuo, Avenue Yasukuni and Old Nakasen road, and shows the unique street landscape of Tokyo, including closely connected buildings, roads, sidewalks and roofs. The intersection of several different roads makes the vehicle travel in various directions, one-way, two-way, straight, turning, etc. There are crosswalks at every intersection.  Behind the building, the railway line of Tokyo runs through the city.

This ANT diagram traces several stages of development in the history of modern architecture in Japan and the reasons for the high density of buildings in Tokyo. Japanese modern architecture experienced the imitation of Western architecture in the Meiji Restoration period. By the beginning of the 20th century, more and more Japanese modern architecture affected by the West had been made. After World War II, the most famous Japanese architectural school, metabolism school, came into being, advocated that cities and buildings were dynamic, and actively used new technology to solve architectural and urban problems, such as Tange Kenzo's Tokyo Bay urban axis.
The reason for the high building density in Tokyo also comes partly from the above-mentioned problems, that is, the rapid increase of population and a number of restrictions on building storey height in Japan, resulting in the high building density in Tokyo.

This image shows the city road as a traffic lane during the day and a place for people to gather and activities at night. I added several materials with Tokyo characteristics, cherry blossoms, dense signboards, mobile video vendors, busy office workers, and Japanese summer fireworks. This image first shows the changing environment at night, then shows the possible activities at night, and finally people's participation.
