This figure ground diagram shows a section of the Friedrichshain neighborhood in Berlin. The area includes many residential buildings with retail and dining spaces on the ground floor. Friedrichshain also has numerous greenspaces, including the Boxhagener Platz east of the circled building in this diagram.

This aerial view shows a block in Friedrichshain facing Boxhagener Platz. The block is surrounded by four roads: Kreuzigerstrase, Krossener, Simon-Dach-Strase, and Grunberger. Boxhagener Platz includes open space for flea markets and recreation.

This drawing highlights details about Friedrichshain, Boxhagener Platz, and the Wilhelmine Ring architectural style that the block follows. Vehicular and pedestrian traffic are signified by the dashed red arrows accross the drawing. Tables on the sidewalk show the use of that space by restaurants and cafes. Also, Boxhagener Platz is arranged to facilitate the weekly flea markets where the neighborhood convenes.

This ANT diagram examines the history of the Friedrichshain neighborhood. It looks at its origination, its existence under Nazi and Soviet rule, and its transformation in modern Germany. This exercise exposed the significance of the Wilhelmine Ring architectural style that permeated across the city. The inclusion of multiple small, inner courtyards was effective in maximizing the efficiency of the urban space. The exercise also exposed the impact of gentrification in the neighborhood over the past 1-2 decades.

These images of the block and Boxhagener Platz show the gentrification that is occuring within the Friedrichshain neighborhood. The right side of the images reflects the neighborhood relatively unchanged. Posters and grafitti express resistance to the ongoing transformation of the neighborhood. The left side of the images show the gentrification in process, depicting components like a new condominium tower and modernized street lighting. The selection and placement of humans in the images are designed to show the gentrifying process as well.
